Analysis and the principle of Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometer

Principle

Gas chromatography (GC) is a method to analyze multi-component gas mixture by passing through a separation column. An inert gas such as Helium is used as the carrier gas (mobile phase), whereas a polysiloxane or polyethylene glycol type liquid phase, held by inner wall of the hollow capillary is used as stationary phase. Each component is separated due to differences in the affinity to the stationary phase, with their solubility, adsorption… etc., while passing through the column and is detected when it reaches the detector – mass spectrometer (MS). In a mass spectrometer, components are ionized and detected according to the mass per charge number (m/z) of fragmented ions. 

Qualitative and quantitative analysis of organic components are mainly possible from the obtained chromatograms and mass spectra.

  • Component identification of exhaust gas, flammable gas, heat generated gas and outgassing
  • Measurement of pesticides, environmental pollutants, sick house syndrome, sick car syndrome…etc.
  • Analysis of the high polymer additives
    (Changes of trace constituents due to deterioration of resin and rubber)
  • Analysis of solvent components, odor components, perfumes, essential oils, floating oils and adhering oils
